“Human beings are in a constant state of ‘becoming’. Anthropological becoming binds the human condition inseparably to countless explorations of one’s own past. We search for fragments of lost time, we find them, we lose them, we find them again. We live in a perpetual Proustian perpetuum mobile. Moreover, our becoming leaves traces — more or less profound — not only within ourselves, but also in the biotic, organic, and inorganic world that surrounds us. Some of these traces are truly special, endowed with that something special of which Ellen Dissanayake speaks, thus elevated to the status of art. […] As much dynamism, so much restraint; as much emotion, so much reserve. A smile addressed to the viewer from the full, childlike heart of the artist (Self-Portrait on Grandmother’s Terrace) is immediately tempered by the boundless sadness visible on the face of the young man portrayed as Honoré Subrac, Apollinaire’s strange hero (David as Honoré Subrac). […] One deluge after another (the Deluge series), one skull after another (the Skull series), a taxidermy specimen, vegetal remains, filament-like trees — all these create a state of existential unease, a memento mori, only faintly softened by a few delicate flowers invested with a note of the sacred (the Annunciation series).”
